Never a big fan of fictionalized "history", I fail to understand the appeal of Star Trek and all the tedious back story one must endure to fully enjoy it. I appreciate the Jungian archetypes, allusions to the Bible and metaphors for human travails, but on balance, Jane is not a Trekkie. In small doses administered by Hunky Husband, however, my favorite episodes center around the horrifyingly simplistic Borg.
The hive concept, dependent on its eerily attractive "Queen", is fascinating. All the humanoid drones are quite literally plugged into the main brain so as to think as one unit. Individualism is not permitted. They are feared for their singular mission of pursuing targets for assimilation to which "resistance is futile". They wish nothing more than to increase their numbers in the elusive quest for perfection.
Ah, the luxury of having to never think again, or be individually accountable for any action. Surrendering self to a greater collective mind would so liberating, don't you think?
Ooops. Forgot the mandate. Thinking is not allowed. There is no "I" in "Borg".
No "I" in al-Qaeda.
Nope. No "I" in Democrat, either.
There is an "I" in liberal as in "me, me, me."
[JANE SAYS: You must have learned THAT on Sesame Street. The training video loop of the LEFT. ;) (I know you and I know you are being sarcastic...but maybe they won't notice!)]

Speaking of Jung, he would be proud. Is the Borg not the logical conclusion of the collective unconscious?
Oh wait... that was (one of) your point(s) wasn't it...
[JANE SAYS: PSYCH 101...one of my favorite subjects in college because the prof was such an asshat. But I learned a LOT about the "enemy".]

"WE are the Democrats. YOU will be assimilated. Lower your rhetoric and surrender your blogs. WE will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Except for the patriotism- we hate that stuff. YOUR culture will adapt to service Islam. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE."

Star Trek series have always been about sex, from the devine and glowing Kirk to the cold Spock and the beauteous borgs. Sex, just sex!
[JANE SAYS: Behold--Miss Carnivirous, the television critic. And for the record. You're right. Those pointy Spock ears...veeery phallic.]
