The Goth Worker Program

I love my President. I believe he is decent and kind. But in the same way that I will not tolerate a lecture by Algore about greenhouse gases delivered as he boards his Gulfstream 5, a "virtual fence" is little comfort offered by a man who will make 1,583 fenced and tax payer guarded acres (scroll way down for full glorious effect and detail) his cozy home when he leaves us regular Janes to fight it out in the real world in the fallout of his collusion with Big Business.
Makes me wonder if the Roman Emperor Valens thought all those Visigoth barbarians he "invited" over the Danube river, in their escape from the Huns, would do the jobs that Romans just wouldn't do? He allowed them, numbering in the 100's of thousands, to cross what had been the natural protective border of the Eastern Roman Empire for centuries, hoping the refugees would become soldiers and farmers.
But the arrogant Christian Emperor never made those immigrants swear allegiance to Rome.
The second class status of the displaced race now in the midst of the Roman citizenry made for the perfect storm. The war that followed is considered by many historians to be the first domino in the fall of the Roman Empire. And since they never found the ancient emperor's body after the victory of the Goths at the Battle of Adrianople, I guess we can't ask him how that whole open border thing worked out for him, now can we?
Republican Congressman John Culberson of Texas is passing out challenge coins with the Roman Emperor Valens emblazoned upon them to remind Americans that if we do not learn the lessons of history, ours will surely be rewritten in Spanish. Or perhaps a quaint Arabic dialect.
Too bad Congressman Culberson is not handing out pesos. Because in the text of a sweetheart deal with President Fox, The Mexican Totalization Agreement, just begrudgingly released by the increasingly unstable Social Security Administration, states that one retirement peso will suddenly equal one retirement dollar. If President Bush signs this, as he is expected to, without a vote by Congress, this convenient monetary conversion will be for the Social Security and retirement calculations of illegal aliens only, mind you. Super.
All one needs do now is renounce legal citizenship to save a burro load of cash by paying the relatively small $2000 "penalty fee" proposed by the "Guest Worker Amnesty" folks in Congress-- a mere quarter of the average tax bill that most Americans paid last year.
Maybe they won't mind if we pay it in pesos.
I'm going to have to see if I can get one or more of those challenge coins. Wonder if they are on Ebay yet...

Well, I certainly wouldn't have learned about this in the MSM. Thanks for enlightening us.

Actually, yes, Valens DID believe the Visigoths would do the job Romans wouldn't. Namely defend Rome from the encroachment of other Germanic tribes leaving Valens and his brother to defend the other segments of the Empire, namely the East. Granted, despite just letting Fritrgen in, tons of Goths entered anyway, fleeing the ravages of the Huns.
The loss of the 32,000 Legionnaries at Adrianople should have been a drop in the hat. But given Rome's vast manpower shortage, it all but finished the Western Empire. Ironic seeing as it was the Eastern Empire that suffered the catastrophic defeat.
Further, Valens did let the Visigoths in, but at the same time, he never gave them a chance to assimilate. All contemporary evidence points to the fact that the Visigoths were genuinely willing to cooperate with the Romans, as Theodosius would prove not 10 years after Adrianople. Indeed, the Visigoths became so helpful and influential that it was Visigothic soldiers who helped defeat Attila and Visigothic generals who helped save the Eastern Empire so that it would survive until 1453, working as a bulwork against the Islamic tide that arose in the 7th Century.
The contempory evidence not only shows that the Visigoths were more than willing to be loyal citizens of Rome as is implied by the application of the Constitutio Antoniniana, but that Valens never gave them a chance. Stories of Goths being forced to sell one child into slavery to pay extortionary taxes to save the other are common. By every account, Valens taxed the Visigoths into poverty and convinced them that the Visigoths had no option but to revolt and rectify the wrongs done to them.
If you want to review the evidence yourself, there is plenty. Ammianus Marcellinus is a good one. He was a soldier around the time. He fought for Emperor Julian earlier in the century, and his history ends with the defeat at Adrianople.
He is eminently readable, as it seems he wrote for people who had never even seen a barbarian. His description of Huns is hilarious, so its a very light read, but provides us with some good on the ground context.
P.S.- The reason they never found Valens was because he was quite possibly burned to death in a shack after he fled the battle leaving the rest of his men to die. After force marching them in full gear in sweltering heat for miles.
[JANE SAYS: They allied against Valens with Procopius way before he let them in. That should have been the give away. He took them for granted, the same way our establishment has taken for granted the "cheap labor" (read: costs transferrred to localities) of the illegals. Disgusting, really.]

Yes, they allied against Valens. But were we not allied with the Soviets in World War II and mortal enemies not 5 years later? Politics make strange bedfellows.
Just because the Visigoths fought Valens earlier does not mean they sought to undermine Rome once they entered. Again, their behavior under Emperors who kept their word, and let them retain their customs and elect local leaders in exchange for military service tells us that the Visigoths were more than happy to work under the Roman umbrella.
Indeed, even after Alaric sacked Rome in 410, he asked for nothing more than a corner of France for the Visigoths to live in and defend. Indeed, before the sack, Alaric had beseiged Rome several times before, because the Romans had reneged on the agreements they had made with the Visigoths. Each time he came before Rome, the Emperor(now in Ravenna anyway) or the Senate would offer him money and promise to keep the agreement from there on out. Eventually Alaric got tired of it and showed that he did have the guts to sack Rome, which was probably a pretty light affair anyway. If I recall correctly, Alaric forbid most forms of looting traditionally associated with a sack, like raping, murder and so forth.
Why? Because Alaric just wanted to live in peace, and since the Romans had not yet given the Visigoths a fair shake, he needed to show the Romans that the Visigoths would hit back against their oppressors. He knew if he came off as a savage in taking Rome he wouldn't get it. The sack of 410 was more symbolic than anything. If he really wanted to hurt the Empire he would have taken Ravenna or Milan, where Imperial power had gone long ago. Rome was nothing but a symbol by 410.
My point is that in this case, analogizing what happened with the Visigoths to today's immigrant issues doesn't quite fit. Unless you want to say that by oppressing them we are going to incite them to revolt and destroy us. Which I don't think will happen.
[JANE SAYS: For all that typing...the last sentence is where you make MY point--importing an underclass for our own uses is devisive and WILL bite us in the rear, whether YOU think it will or not. You sound like a learned historian, if not the most realistic citizen. Welcome! Come back anytime!]

Well, none of this stuff should surprise us. Pres Bush is an "open-borders" kinda guy. He could have shut down the borders immediately after the 9/11 murders, but did not do so. He could have put troops on the borders, but till this day, he refuses to do so.
Evidently, he has a great love for Mexico and wants to make things as easy as possible for those who enter our country illegally from the southern border. He will not put troops on the border because he feels that Mexico is a friend and ally. Never mind that the Mexican govt issued comic books instructing illegals how to cross our borders undetected. Never mind Mexican military crossing over our border for God knows what reason, or shooting at our border patrolmen.
Pres Bush hopes that various monetary incentives will discourage illegals from entering our country. Pres Bush has memorized himself into believing that illegals do the work that Americans will not do, but he never mentions (as far as I know) having labor laws enforced so that various companies will pay the FAIR AND PROPER WAGES to Americans, as required by labor laws. Indeed, American dollars are flowing over the border to Mexico and other countries south of the border because the American Dollar is greatly prefered.
Nevermind that too many cities here are sanction illegal aliens and Pres Bush does not issue an executive order to prevent this.
Mexico, and perhaps other Latin American countries, as well, do not need to impliment domestic improvement programs because AMERICA IS THE DOMESTIC IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR MEXICO, AND PERHAPS THOSE OTHER COUNTRIES, AS WELL.
[JANE SAYS: Dingdingding, give Dervish the prize...WE ARE THE WELFARE PROGRAM...hope you checked out those last links about the MEXICAN TOTALIZATION PROGRAM....What a ream that one is...

[JANE SAYS: I am not seeing it on my list. Ihave to approve them but it is not coming through...DID YOU USE THE PERMALINK ADDRESS--not just the main page addy? Try that.]

I used the trackback URL. Twice. I'll try the permalink address.
[JANE SAYS: Bless your heart...and I am flattered you tried. My Trackbacks don't work at HotAir and all Bryan can tell me is that it may be a server/Spam conflict.THANK YOU FOR TRYING. Great post, Jane. And for all the trouble PRCalDude had with trackbacks, I think I sent you two. Please ignore the duplicate. One of these days I'll figure out all this tube stuff.
I love the title of this post and will probably refer to it many times (with proper credit always). And I would like to add, you introduced me to Alabama Improper, thanks for that! I did not know she was your blog inspiration, how very cool.
[JANE SAYS: Both of yours were waiting for me in moderation. Thanks! I cannot understand why some work and some don't except that I have been on the receiving end of the NO LINKY LOVE before, as I said with HOTAIR, and it makes you feel like you have the blog herpes or something. It is just mystery, plain and simple.
And CAROL at ALABAMA IMPROPER is my favorite blogger because she was the first woman I found online and she and I are alike in so many ways...only she's cuter.]

A short time ago, I heard a lady call in to a talk show and make this very analogy of Rome with America. She also remarked on our increasingly-soft U.S. culture being more and more prone to turn out "weak-chinned Harry Reid/Tom Daschle types" who were completely ineffectual as leaders in dealing with belligerent and/or violent factions (I believe it was the same caller making both of these points). I thought it was the best call of the whole show.
Was that you, Jane??
I just discovered this site a few days ago; another one for the ol' "Favorites" list. God bless!
[JANE SAYS: If it was the ANDREW WILKOW show on Sirius Patriot #144, just might have been me. Otherwise it was a VERY BRIGHT WOMAN IN NEED OF HER OWN BLOG, dontcha think? And THANK YOU...THANK YOU ...THANK YOU. See you around.]

Here are your sanctuary cities Jane.

[JANE SAYS: THANK YOU>>>Tough day on the Right Wing, will link and post track in day or so. Momming and FUMING, dontcha know? I will go pimp it at HOT AIR>>>do you comment there? You are an LGFer....that's right.]

In relation to the sanctuary city list, it's really nice to see the SD, CA city council at work (sarc). Too bad we can't get the whole bunch purged. Yet.
Found the Congressman's web site, but nothing regarding those coins. Any way of getting a CASE of those sent to SoCal? I'd like to give some of the local politicos and hacks a physical reminder of which side they should be on.
Awesome blog by the way. And just so you know, your bit regarding the '5-sided wind tunnel' has kind of caught on over here. Absolutely priceless.
[JANE SAYS: Well GLAD to have you!!!!! Funny. My friend (SMAAAAALL world) actually MANUFACTURES those coins. Not the VALENS ones, but the challenge kind the Marine Corps uses, and I am trying to get her to make some for me to sell HERE.
And if you only KNEW how frighteningly accurate the analogy was about the PENTAGON being a wind tunnel. You would expatriate. TO.DAY. Don't be a stranger! ;)]

I'd buy one.

We could start a campaign, all the bloggers here would pass it on to other blogs they link too, network market the thing, get Pajamas Media interested, get on Rush, could be huge. Coins galore and you’d make a bit of change for the idea. Just say’in.
Posted by: Rancher | May 23, 2007 at 10:07 PM
And I'm a Minuteman, I know bunch that would love this.
[JANE SAYS: You're a bit into this, aren't you? This could work. Ill have to ask her about the reality of cost. I'm sure PJM would simply steal the idea. If you aren't on their "list", you pretty much can forget blog recognition. I have had PJM bloggers STEAL MY STUFF. Nobody BIG, just PJM members. Some days I really think that the Left has the right idea. They OWN the internet because the DO have a "hive" mentality. Those on the Right care little about "moving the Conservative ball down the field" via this Web medium, and more about their own aggrandizement. This is one area where we have to almost become what we despise (a collective) to make the Conservative message more mainstream.
Sorry if I seem cynical, I have just seen the dark underbelly of the Rightosphere. And it just ain't "all that".
But I WILL look into costs and time.]
