Once upon a time a Conservative actor made his appearance on the GOP stage and he was maligned and subordinated by the Republican establishment until suddenly the traction he was getting could not be ignored. Fred Thompson is a Conservative actor.
But Fred Thompson is no Ronald Reagan.
Earlier this week FOCUS ON THE FAMILY ministry leader, Doctor James Dobson, came out with a disconcerting pronouncement and less than subtle signal that "Law and Order" star Fred Thompson, the former Senator from Tennessee, might not be a Christian's Christian. While I find it Eternally dangerous to dabble in the damnation game, I find some substance to the question of Fred Thompson as the long awaited independently electable Conservative savior.
My curiosity is piqued by a phone conversation that took place between two old friends back on March 9th. The transcript of that conversation is not readily available, but Senator Fred Thompson and Senator John McCain go way back (think McCain-Feingold) and apparently had a grand chat. Two short days later, Freddy begins his political strip tease on "Fox News Sunday".
Let Jane connect some dots for you. The buzz in my home state of South Carolina is that Lindsey Graham has become unfit for service to harvest the true Conservative vote in the South with that whole Gang of Fourteen mess and will not even be re-elected to his Senate seat. He didn't dance with the one who brung him, and Carolinians won't forget that. I think that's just the cover for other **issues** which might make him less suitable to balance a ticket to the Conservative side. Those things will poke their heads from behind the door soon enough. And John McCain can ill afford that Samsonite.
JANE'S CAUTIONARY TALE: Sometimes an actor wants to be President. Sometimes an actor is just acting. And sometimes a Senator from Tennessee just wants to be an understudy.
You heard it here first. Psst...pass it on...

If you want to grill my CPAC buddy Patrick Hynes, New Media front man for John McCain, you can call in to Ed Morrisey's BLOG RADIO SHOW TONIGHT.
Hmmm.... Food for thought. Thompson wants to be the lipstick on the McCain pig....
If indeed you are on to something here, I believe it will backfire bigtime.

Why aren't we all talking about Duncan Hunter?
Fred Thompson? who cares, John mclame? can't stand him, Rudy? Only if it's him or hillary.
Duncan Hunter for President! Check him out.

I would vote for Duncan Hunter based on what I've read about him. I would also vote for Fred Thompson over Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. That being said, I think Fred Thompson has more name recognition that Hunter does. In this day and age, politics is more about appearances and less about substance. I think Fred Thompson wins in that contest. If fact, I'm not sure Duncan Hunter can win his own state of California with it's heavily liberal voting history! (not that Thompson would either, but...)

I'm a strong conservative and I am against Fred Thompson. Fred D. Thompson is a member of the Ted Kennedy wing of the Republican party as evidenced by his contributions to the immigration problem we have here in California. (Liberal democrats such as Al Gore have a better record on immigration than Thompson). Example: Which of the following has a better record on immigration? Fred Thompson or Al Gore? Americans for Better Immigration gave Thompson a "C" grade while Gore has an "A". While Californians were fighting for Prop 187 in 1994-1998, Thompson was in the Senate contributing to the immigration problem we have today. The fact that Al Gore and 32 Congressional Democrats have a better record on fighting immigration than Thompson warrants his inclusion in the Kennedy wing. I support Duncan Hunter for President.
[JANE SAYS: Good to know! Fred!'s duplicity on the whole McCain-Feingold thing STINKS, so I have yet to find my (viable) candidate of choice. I kinda like Tancredo and Huckabee...but JIM GILMORE was a FINE CONSERVATIVE Governor of the fair state in which I reside, though I vote absentee somewhere else.
The PRIMARY PROCESS exists to put voices to all the wings>>>so RAISE YOUR VOICE AND WORK FOR HUNTER WHILE IT IS STILL (theoretically) possible to be heard! And may the BEST CONSERVATIVE WIN! ;) ]
