If Bill Clinton can stand before God and make a promise to "love this woman, Hillary Rodham, till death do us part", then turn and betray his oath, it is axiomatic that at some point he would betray the American people. I found it laughable when the nation seemed genuinely dismayed that he lied to the Grand Jury. We Conservatives jeered, "Character counts!", "Private lives matter!", and my personal favorite, "Character counts!".
If Republicans wish to continue to claim to be the Party of Family Values, the leaders we choose must be role models of private as well as public virtue. A candidate's opinions on abortion are immaterial when measured against his devotion to his own family, because that is truly the only "family value" the President will ever have much dominion over. And while keeping a personal life together under the strain of public demands on one's time must be a tough row to hoe, such are the choices men make.
Rudy chose to marry and make two babies with Donna Hanover.
Rudy chose to have a less than private affair and nasty public divorce.
More sacred than the marriage vow itself is a duty to the children that come of that union.
I am not down on Rudy the politician. I am not even down on Rudy the husband. I am down on Rudy the father. Certainly, no man of character would take the sacred oath he made to God, ball it up and throw it away for the first skirt who turns his head. Right? Isn't that what Conservatives said?
But no father who would dare do the same to the sacred gift of his children deserves to be the leader of the Party of Family Values.
Jane, that common sense you're wearing is DEFINITELY your color.
[JANE SAYS: It doesn't make me look fat? ;) Thank you. Sometimes it is the most basic things that we overlook.]

One of these days people are going to wake up and realize that Rudy isn't a conservative.

Uh, Jane? Aren't you a big supporter of Newt Gingrich? Surely you are aware that he had a long extramarital affair and then divorced his wife while she was in the hospital for cancer?
[JANE SAYS: I said I liked him as a politician. He has some very good ides that are way ahead of their time. He is not the man I am supporting for President. I'm not sure that man (or woman) has stepped up yet.]

I'm bothered by the fact that so many conservatives believe (or pretend to believe) none of this matters. I do not support Giuliani because of his positions on abortion, gun control, gay marriage and illegal immigration. I am perfectly willing to overlook some things in a candidate's personal life because none of us are "perfect". Having said that, Giuliani has disgraced his family and his Catholic faith, in my opinion. Regardless of who was more to blame in his second marriage, he was reckless in how he handled it. Trotting around town with another woman while you're still married is bad enough. But when you are the mayor of New York City and everybody recognizes you, that's just arrogant. A "to hell with the consequences" attitude. And a not so great quality for the President of the United States. If he puts his own desires above the welfare of his children, what kind of man can he be?
I will vote for Giuliani if he is the Republican nominee. But for now, I'm looking for someone who more closely reflects my beliefs and that person is not Rudy.
I know I will have to give in on some of my strongly held views and that's OK. Not one candidate has come to me and said "What do you want, Julie? That's what I'll do." (I wish). But I know the Republican Party can do better. Are we even gonna try?
[JANE SAYS: I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU 100%. It is NOT a character quality I will accept in a President.
FOLKS, THE PRIMARIES ARE WHERE THE BATTLE FOR THE PARTY IS WON AND LOST. Once the Primaries are over, its all over but lighting the cigarette and tying the blindfold.]

I stand corrected. I guess I was misled by your description of Newt as "the next President of the United States" and "our next Commander in Chief."

And... you didn't even mention that Giuliani Nifonged Michael Milken to launch his political career. See: http://blog.ilanamercer.com/

Im going to save myself some typing and just echo mad cow's comment.
but I will add...
Ive always been a big fan of Rudy even though I think he may be insane, but even I can remember seeing him prance his mistress around town during his very public and very nasty divorce and thinking to myself that this is a man incapable of controlling his emotions.
I have no problem with people having affairs, but decorum must dictate discretion in these matters.
[JANE SAYS: I'm with you. Rudy--please don't make YOUR problem, OUR problem.]

I don't know who will end up at the finish line but right now Rudy would get my vote.
I don't think I've ever had a candidate that met every single criteria that I had in mind.
With Rudy I get "most" of what I'd need to support the man.
Most importantly ... I think he can WIN!
[JANE SAYS: Just throwing y'all some red meat to get you really THINKING about what our party is all about and how far we are willing to go to keep an "R" in the White House.]

Character matters, kids. Period.
That said, it’s early, despite the fact that the MainStream Mess wants the parties to anoint their candidates, now. Among other things, – flashing $ signs and ratings #s can be blinding - the early attention and attempts to compress the nomination process are means to “confuzzle.” That strategy works against the principled – us - and if we succumb to it, we could have an “oops!” candidate and end up with a “D” in the White House. So, take a deep breath, have fun, but be *patient*.
[JANE SAYS: WELCOME AUNT B! You are new! Well said, and you are 110% correct.]
