Just a hunch, but I don't think the "nappy hos" at Rutgers are listening to Lawrence Welk and Pat Boone while they workout before a big game.
If I confiscated the iPods of every single one of the "offended" women basketball players I would lay money---big money---that at least half of them contained hip hop music that (if asked before this Imus flap) would not have offended them in the least. They were probably out shaking their "booties" (can I say that?) to some choice misogynistic lyrics at a frat party the very night before they were all so "offended".
Welcome to P.C. America. Please watch your step, don't "offend" the Liberals and whatever you do, don't use the phrase "nappy headed ho" when what you really meant to say was the more economical, "nigger".
Because the hypocrites will lynch you either way.
I've noticed a sharpening of Jane's "edge" lately. I like it. The more people say what they think and call a thing what it is, the more accepted non-political correctness will become. And only that will save America.
[JANE SAYS: I love words. ALL words. I love the feel of them in my mouth. The way they flow from my favorite fountain pen. The economy of masters like Hemingway and O'Connor. EVERY word has its place. If we say words when we mean them instead of some pussy substitute, we might all understand one another better, be less offended and more empowered. After all, they are ONLY WORDS.
Jane does NOT say "Heck!" when she MEANS, "HELL!"
No one should.]

Let me say at the outset that I would shed no tears if the sacrifice of Imus resulted in cleaning up the poison masquerading as "art" coming from the hip-hop crowd.
However, it is somewhat of a red herring to say that these women should not be offended by being called "hos" because of their choice of music. If I watch an R-rated movie filled with profanity, that does not mean that I would not be offended by someone cursing me out. In the movie (as well as the music for these women I imagine), I understand the words are not directed at me. When they are directed at me (or, like Imus, directed at the women), all bets are off. Plus, these women were basketball players, not public figures or elected officials who would be more "fair game." The remark was out of bounds, no qualifiers added.
[JANE SAYS: Ugly? Yes. Out of bounds? Why? Imus has no right to a radio show and shouuld have been canned, I suppose, but what I regret is his groveling at the feet of Jesse Jackson WHO WILL APOLOGIZE to NO man for ANYTHING.
And as for Hip hop not being "directed" at these women. ....I'm sorry sir, step away from YOUR CRACK PIPE and realize that EVERY LYRIC IS GENERATED BY MEN WHO HATE WOMEN AND DIRECTED AT WOMEN.
ALL WOMEN.
And Yes, they are "public" figures. They wear a UNIFORM of a bigger organization. They are not on that court as INDIVIDUALS under their own banners. This DOES NOT Make them TARGETS, but that part of your argument is simply fallacious, however unintentionally.]

Crack pipe? Okay...
Perhaps I was not clear. I agree with you that these "artists" are misogynistic thugs. However, they are not talking SPECIFICALLY about the Rutgers women in their "music." Imus was talking specifically about them in his "ho" comment and that is where I see no disingenuity in their claim they were offended by his remarks.
Posted by: Charles | April 16, 2007 at 07:46 AM
or perhaps I should say "talking specifically TO the Rutgers women" whereas Imus WAS talking specifically to them when he called them "hos."
[JANE SAYS: But I am a woman. Hip Hop music offends me. I let words have power over me. I am offended. I need a lawyer....." do you see where all this is leading????]

So it's ok to insult every-woman on the planet by calling then "bitches" and "hos", as long as you don't narrow it down to one specific group of women in a basketball uniform?
Huh?

Sniper,
Where did I say it was okay?
What I said was I disagree that a person could not be offended by a misogynistic vile slur directed at them personally just because they have heard misogynistic, vile lyrics directed towards women in general. This does not mean I support people using misogynistic vile slurs and, in fact, I have said that several times above.
What I think has blurred this somewhat obvious point is that race warlords like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have come to the defense of these Rutgers women. Jackson and Sharpton's slime has dripped onto the whole situation keeping otherwise logical thinkers from seeing the picture clearly.

I any case, I don't think what Imus said was offensive enough to deserve firing.
[JANE SAYS: If its wrong, its wrong. What he said was no worse than what that community says about itself every single day a gajillion times an hour on urban radio. It should all go away, but because the MAJORITY wants it to go away. The rights of the minority (women) are being trampled with NO regrets by the same lobby that claims "tolerance" and equal rights.
Al and Jesse are racial racketeers who need to be FORCED into another line of work by the SILENT WHIMP majority that needs to find its STONES and send these charlatans packing.
The Republican party could start in Al and Jesse's backyard by fostering MEANINGFUL relationships with CONSERVATIVE BLACK AMERICANS who hate these twatwaffles as much as we do. Let the BLACK COMMUNITY clean its OWN house, and give them sanctuary and a REAL PLACE AT THE "table" when they do.]

Agreed, Sniper.
However, CNN was running this story 24 hrs non-stop so it became toxic to advertisers. I think the whole thing would have blown over had advertisers stuck to their guns. But once Imus became a financial liability, it was time to go.
The only positive thing that can come of this, in my opinion, is if this sparks some real discussion on the hip-hop community. I don't think we should throw out the 1st Amendment of course, but if the market decides to pull out funding for these utterly worthless disgusting "artists," perhaps the industry could self-police. But I'm probably dreaming.
[JANE SAYS: CHARLES>>>>>You are new here, and ALWAYS welcome with thoughtful discourse. NO ONE has to toe the POLITICAL party line here. George has let me down . I'm on record for that.
I see from your email that you might be from my neck of the woods. GOOOOOOOOooooo DAWGS! SIC 'EM!!!!! And if you are not a DAWG fan.....beat it because there IS A "PARTY" line here when it comes to football!!! ..........and don't let the doorknob hit ya......;) ;) ;) ]

People don't vote with their pocketbooks enough, or there really is a market in such filth. I'm not sure which.
All I do know, is that the one single venue I can always find a good dose of misogyny and self loathing would be at the local strip club. I'm not sure of the girls pick out their own music, but it's the vilest woman-hating crap I've heard.
If the music didn't suck so bad, I might consider going more than once a month.

some hope yet, although this topic borders on trivial given the tragedy unfolding at VA Tech...

Silly me... I didn't realize that Nappy headed was strictly a non-white insult.
I've known enough nappy headed white girls to be more open minded about that insult. And yes, some of those nappy headed white chicks were hos.
[JANE SAYS: What will be INTERESTING is whether or not when it comes time to sue, if the WHITE GIRLS are considered "aggrieved" precisely because hey are white, and thereby NOT CAPABLE OF BEING INSULTED BY BEING CALLED "nappy". See? THEN WHAT?]

Imus is an idiot. He should have composed a little diddy ... sang it on his show and everything would have been ... fine!
