Sorry for my sudden disappearance, folks.
The last of my dear grandmother Jane's surviving siblings, Great Uncle Bob, was buried with full military honors in our private family cemetary alongside our Revolutionary ancestors in Sleepy Southern Hometown on my actual fortieth birthday.
I was surrounded by those I most dearly love, all wearing black, standing around sobbing on a crisp early fall day, the equal of which I cannot recall. Then it was off to the wake to laugh, reminisce, and eat the FINEST apple cream UNbirthday cake that has ever passed my lips. And the very best part?
Not a soul focused on me and I was able to make peace with my passage to middle age in public privacy.
Class timing, Uncle Bob.
I'll be 40 in December babe. We ain't middle-aged. Not by an "F'n" long shot.
Sorry to hear about Great Uncle Bob, but glad to hear he went with honor and his family around him.
Sorry I've been out of loop. A lot of stuff I had to do. Healthier now because of it. I know you understand.
Hugs,
Paul

Happy Birthday, Janie -- and remember 40 is the new 20!!
Take, for example, what most 20-year-old's were like in 1945. The woman were struggling at home to make ends meet, or working to support the war effort, or ferrying planes across the pond, etc. The men were (more than likely) in the service to our nation and at least highly-disciplined (if not battled-tested), pulling as a united country to one goal. Most took a more caring look at love, family, duty and country and most prayed to God. An education was something you worked hard to get... look at us now.
(now, I'm depressed...)
I'll raise a glass to Uncle Bob -- I'm hoping he won't object to a rum and Coke (hoping he wasn't a tea-totaler) --
"May the World see more Uncle Bob's and Founding Fathers and fewer Barack Obama's and Bill Ayers...here's to you, Uncle Bob!"
[JANE SAYS: You are tooo sweet, and Bob was a bptist who married "outside" the religion, so he indulged. ;) And you are right. The "middle class" looks NOTHING like it did when Uncle Bob was a young man. He was the mayor of my Sleepy Southern Hometown, and he was the kind of man I want to raise my children to be.
And I join you in your malaise. But that is the Liberal Media talking. I am taking a news embargo until election night (except for work) for my own mental health.
On election night, I will either be relieved, but worried, or terrified and suicidal. No matter who wins, a nap in my gas oven might be in order. ]
